GAP is an acronym for Generic Access Profile. Standardized wireless interface to DECT base stations. Thanks to this standardization, the interface enables communication between different mobile handsets of different manufacturers and the base station. Depending on the base station, between 3 and 6 handsets can be connected without additional wires.

GAP is a central profile on which all others are based. It is used to detect peripherals among themselves. It represents the lowest layer, the foundation of Bluetooth communications. The GAP merely detects and establishes the connection between the devices. The rest of the functions fall under the other profiles.
